UPSC Selection Cycle
The Civil Services Examination is conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission in three distinct, elimination-based stages. Success requires a structured long-term strategy for static concepts and daily news.

Stage 1: Preliminary
Objective type check. Two papers of 200 marks each, conducted in a single day:
- • GS Paper I: General awareness, mapping, economy, polity, history, environment (Cutoff marks).
- • GS Paper II (CSAT): Basic math, logic, reasoning (Qualifying: requires 33%).

Stage 2: Mains Exam
Descriptive essay and subject papers. Total of 9 papers (1750 marks contribute to final rank merit):
- • 1 Essay Paper (250 marks)
- • 4 General Studies Papers (GS I-IV)
- • 2 Optional Papers of selected subject
- • 2 Qualifying Language papers (300 marks each)

Stage 3: Interview
Personality Test (275 marks). A purposeful, natural conversation with an unbiased Board:
- • Evaluates mental alertness, social cohesion, and balance of judgment.
- • Tests depth of interest, integrity, and leadership potential.
- • Based on DAF application profile.
